You'll need
- 1/2 cup rice
- 1/4 cup toor dal
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrot, beans, peas, potato), diced
- 2 tbsp tamarind pulp
- 2 tbsp bisi bele bath masala (or sambar powder)
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- A few curry leaves
- Salt to taste
Method
- Pressure-cook the rice, toor dal and vegetables together with 4 cups water until soft.
- Mash lightly, then stir in the tamarind pulp, masala and salt, and simmer for 10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- In a small pan, heat ghee and fry mustard seeds and curry leaves until they sputter.
- Pour the tempering over the dish and serve hot.
Why this dish
Cooking the rice, dal and vegetables together into one soft, well-spiced dish is a traditional way of making a full meal easy to digest in a single pot, rather than separate rice, dal and sabzi.
