You'll need
- 2 fresh amla (Indian gooseberry)
- 1/2 inch ginger
- 1/2 cup water
- A pinch of black salt (optional)
Method
- Deseed the amla and roughly chop it along with the ginger.
- Blend with the water until smooth, then strain through a sieve.
- Stir in a pinch of black salt if you like, and drink fresh, ideally first thing in the morning.
Why this dish
Amla is one of the most classically valued fruits in Ayurveda for its sour, Vitamin-C-rich profile, which is why it's traditionally taken fresh and first thing rather than cooked into a dish.
